JULIA ( BARD ) INGALLS

Laura Ingalls Wilder was  made famous by the award-winning book Little House In The Big Woods and the T.V. series "Little House on the Prairie." Julia (Bard) Ingalls was Laura's Aunt.  The following is her story:

Julia E. Bard was born July 15, 1859 in Michigan. On June 11, 1876 Julia E. Bard married George Ingalls,( Brother of Charles Ingalls ) in Alden (Polk County) Wisconsin.  The couple settled in Alden and had several children , all of them dying shortly after birth. Their next child lived for a year, but when they took him to visit relatives one winter, he was so tightly bundled that he smothered. Julia was so distraught over the deaths of her children, that in 1888 she was admitted to the Wisconsin State Hospital for the Insane at Mendota. Five years later, she was transferred to the Dunn County Asylum for the Chronic Insane in Red Cedar Township ( Dunn County ) Wisconsin. Julia Ingalls died there  May 20, 1910.    Julia's parents were settled in Michigan at the time of her death and could not afford having her brought there for burial. Julia was laid to rest in  the Dunn County Asylum's Cemetery , Potter's Field.
